How long does local SEO take to actually work?

This is the question we get asked first on almost every call: how fast will SEO work? It is a fair question. You are spending real money. You want a real answer.

The honest answer for most local businesses is three to six months before you should expect search results to clearly shift, and nine to twelve months before SEO starts compounding into a steady source of leads. That is not a hedge. It is what the work actually looks like when it is done well.

Here is what should be happening at each stage, what should not, and how to tell whether your program is on track before the rankings catch up to the work.

Month 1: the work happens before the results do

The first month is mostly invisible from the outside. We audit your site, your Google Business Profile, your existing rankings, and the local competitors actually winning in your market. We fix what is broken — pages that are not indexed, pages without titles, GBP fields that are wrong or empty, schema that is firing incorrectly, citations pointing to an old phone number.

None of this moves rankings on day fourteen. It does set the foundation for everything that comes after. If a site is missing the basics — slow load, broken internal links, sloppy on-page structure — every later effort works at half capacity. Month one is when you stop fighting your own site.

What you should see by the end of month one

  • Your Google Business Profile cleaned up
  • The first round of on-page changes pushed live

What you should not see

A ranking spike. If your agency is showing you ranking improvements after three weeks, ask which keywords moved and how. The answer is usually that low-volume long-tail terms moved a few spots, and that is not a real win yet.

Months 2 and 3: the long tail starts moving

This is where you start seeing actual signal. Long-tail keywords — the four-and-five-word phrases customers type when they are close to buying — usually shift first. “Family dentist near Mt Airy.” “Roof leak repair Roxborough.” “Same-day plumber South Philly.” These are lower-volume terms but they convert.

At the same time, your Google Business Profile starts pulling in more impressions. We watch the GBP insights carefully here because they tend to lead the website traffic story by a few weeks. If GBP impressions are climbing, your map-pack visibility is improving even if your website traffic has not caught up yet.

Two to three months in, the right thing to track is direction, not destination. Are impressions trending up week over week? Are you ranking for more keywords than you were sixty days ago? Is your GBP getting more profile views, calls, and direction requests? If those lines are pointing the right way, the program is working.

Months 4 to 6: the curve starts to bend

Somewhere in this stretch is when the work compounds. Around month four or five, impressions stop climbing in a straight line and start curving up. New keywords show up in your ranking reports without you having targeted them specifically. Branded search starts climbing. Calls and form fills tick up.

The reason this happens around month five and not month two is that Google’s ranking systems work on trust, and trust is earned slowly. The site that has been steady for six months looks more credible than the site that was just optimized last week. The reviews that have been answered for six months look more credible than the brand-new ones. Authority compounds. There is no shortcut.

This is the stretch where it starts feeling real. The first “how did you find us — I just Googled you” call is a small moment, but it is the moment that justifies everything that came before.

When SEO will not work in six months

There are situations where six months is not enough, and the honest move is to say so up front.

  • If your website is more than a few years old and has never been touched, the technical cleanup alone can eat the first sixty to ninety days.
  • If your GBP is brand new — newly verified, very few reviews, no posts, no photos — Google needs time to trust it before it will rank in the local pack.
  • If you are in a market with multiple well-established competitors who have been doing this for years, six months gets you on the board, not to the top.
  • If your industry has high commercial intent but heavy ad spend (legal, home services, cosmetic dentistry), the organic results below the ads are tighter and slower to move.

None of these mean SEO is wrong for the business. They just mean a six-month timeline is the floor, not the ceiling.

What to actually track in months one through six

Most owners track rankings. We push back on that. Rankings bounce day to day, vary by location, and rarely tell you what is happening. The metrics that matter early are quieter and more reliable.

  • Indexed pages in Google Search Console — are more of your pages eligible to rank than they were last month?
  • Total impressions in GSC — are people seeing your site in search results, even if they are not clicking yet?
  • GBP profile views, searches, calls, and direction requests — are these climbing?
  • Branded search volume — are more people typing your business name into Google?
  • Inbound calls and form fills attributed to organic — what is the trend, not the daily number?

If those five things are pointing up at month three, the rankings will follow. If they are flat, that is the conversation to have with your agency before another month goes by.
